Legitimate Ways to Get Free Data in Nigeria
A checklist for telling a real free data offer from a scam, and the legitimate sources that actually pay out: networks, apps and rewards programmes.

The short answer
The legitimate ways are: offers from your own network, reward apps that pay out data under clear rules, and free Wi-Fi. Anything else, especially a message promising big free bundles if you share it or enter your details, should be treated as a scam until proven otherwise.
Real offer or scam? A quick checklist
Fake free data offers are common enough that the Nigerian Communications Commission has issued public warnings about them, including a fake "free internet" website claiming to be a government programme. They are usually after your phone number, your personal details or your money.
Walk away if
- It asks for your PIN, OTP, BVN, bank details or card number.
- It asks you to pay a fee to receive the data.
- It asks you to share the message with many contacts or groups first.
- The amount is unusually large, like tens of gigabytes for nothing.
- The link is not the network's official website, or it is a free blog or shortened link.
- It uses a celebrity, the government or the NCC to make it look official.
- It is rushing you: 'only today', 'last 50 people'.
Signs it may be real
- It comes from the network's official app, website, verified account or its short codes.
- It is tied to something you already do, like a recharge or a plan you buy.
- The rules are written down: how much, when, and any limits.
- Apps offering rewards are on the official App Store or Google Play, with a privacy policy.
When in doubt, check directly: open your network's official app or dial its short codes yourself, instead of following a link someone sent you.
The legitimate options
- Network bonuses and promotions. Bonus data on recharges or plans, welcome and loyalty offers. Genuine, but they change often and are usually tied to spending. Check the network's official channels, or dial *312# to see the plans on offer.
- Reward apps. Apps that pay for data and send it to your line in return for activity, such as referrals or watching ads. Look for clear rules, sensible limits and a proper listing on the App Store or Google Play.
- Free Wi-Fi. At home, work, school and public places. Use it for big downloads and updates, and be careful with banking on public networks.
How to Get Free Data in Nigeria explains each of these in more detail, including what doesn't count as free data.
If you have been targeted
- Don't click the link or reply. Don't share it onwards.
- If you entered details, contact your network and your bank straight away.
- Report it to your network first. If they don't resolve it, you can escalate to the NCC on its toll-free line, 622.
Summary
- Legitimate free data comes from your network, reward apps with clear rules, and free Wi-Fi.
- Never give a PIN, OTP, BVN or bank details for 'free data', and never pay a fee.
- Big free bundles for sharing a message are a known scam pattern the NCC has warned about.
- Check offers yourself through the network's official app or short codes.
