Dataly is a data-usage monitor built by OneWave. It is designed to answer one question, "where did my data go?", without collecting the personal content behind that number. This policy explains what the Dataly apps and this website do and do not collect, and the choices you have.
The short version
- Your data-usage history stays on your device. It only reaches our server if you turn on history backup, a Dataly Plus and Platinum feature, and you can delete it at any time.
- Paired devices exchange only their own daily download and upload totals, directly over your local network.
- If you use Free Data rewards (Nigeria), we keep what we need to run them: your reward balance, invites, the ads you completed, and the phone number you redeem to, which we store encrypted.
- An email address is optional. You only give one to sign in and restore your account on a new phone.
- Subscriptions are paid through Google Play or the App Store. We never see your card or payment details.
- We never sell your information, and we don't use your data-usage figures for ads.
- This website sets no cookies and runs no analytics or tracking.
Your account
The mobile apps create an anonymous account for you automatically, using Google Firebase Anonymous Authentication. It is a random identifier, not linked to your name, email or phone number. Our server uses it to keep your rewards, subscription and settings together.
Email sign-in (optional). If you add an email address, we send a one-time code to it (through our email provider, Resend) so you can sign in and restore the same account after reinstalling or on a new phone. We store your email encrypted, plus a one-way fingerprint of it so the same email can't be linked to two accounts. Sign-in codes expire after 10 minutes, are stored only as one-way fingerprints, and are never logged. You can remove your email in Settings at any time.
Information the app collects
Data-usage information. Dataly measures how much data your device sends and receives, and records daily, monthly and historical totals. On iOS, macOS and Windows this is read from the operating system's own counters; on Android it is read through the usage access permission you grant. This information is stored on your device. It is never a record of what you did online: no websites, messages or app contents.
History backup (Dataly Plus and Platinum, optional). If you have a plan that includes backup and you've added an email, the app uploads your daily totals (Wi-Fi and mobile, downloaded and uploaded, per day) to our server so they come back when you sign in on a new phone. Only those numbers are backed up. Removing your email deletes the backup.
Paired-device information. If you pair another device you own, the two devices exchange a small, fixed set of information: a device name you can edit, each device's daily download and upload totals, and the public keys and random identifier used to recognise the pairing. They never exchange files, documents, browsing history, messages, app contents, or any record of what you were doing online.
Free Data rewards (Nigeria). To run rewards we keep your invite code, who invited you (if anyone), your reward balance and its history, streaks, and a record of each rewarded ad you completed as confirmed by Google AdMob. When you redeem, we keep the amount, network, status, and the phone number you entered. The phone number is stored encrypted and is readable only by the staff who send the data bundle; a one-way fingerprint of it is used to apply redemption limits.
Fair-use checks. To stop the same person claiming invite rewards from several accounts or phones, our server records one-way fingerprints of your device identifier (Android ID or Apple's identifier for vendor) and of the network address your requests come from, plus when your app was last active. We compare these only to check rewards, never to identify you or for advertising.
Subscriptions. When you subscribe to Dataly Plus or Platinum, Google Play or the App Store handles the payment. They send us the plan, its status, renewal and expiry dates, the purchase reference, country and price so we can unlock your features and let you restore them. We never receive your card, bank or billing details.
Notifications. If you allow notifications, we store the push token your phone gives us, so we can send reward and usage alerts. Many alerts are created on your phone and never involve our server.
Diagnostics (iOS and Android only). The mobile apps include Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics. These record crash reports and aggregate events about which features are used, tied to your anonymous account identifier. The Mac and Windows apps do not include Firebase at all; they send only a single anonymous "new install" count.
Advertising (iOS and Android only). The mobile apps show ads through Google AdMob to keep Dataly free. Depending on your consent choices, AdMob and its partners may process advertising identifiers and similar device information to serve and measure ads. Where required, we ask for your consent through Google's consent tool, and on iOS through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. If you decline, you still see ads, but non-personalised ones. Some plans remove these ads. The Mac and Windows apps show no ads.
Information this website collects
This website is a set of static pages. It has no sign-up, no contact forms, no cookies, no analytics and no third-party trackers. Our hosting provider, Vercel, automatically records standard technical request logs (such as IP address, timestamp and requested URL) to serve the site and protect it from abuse. We do not use those logs to identify or profile visitors.
How information is used
- To show you your own data usage, on your own device.
- To back up and restore your history and account when you ask us to.
- To run Free Data rewards, invites and redemptions, and to keep them fair.
- To unlock and restore the features of your subscription.
- To let devices you own display each other's totals when you choose to pair them.
- To send the notifications you allowed.
- To diagnose crashes and understand, in aggregate, which features people use.
- To serve ads in the mobile apps so the apps can stay free.
- To operate, secure and improve the apps and this website.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your data-usage figures for advertising.
Local-network communication
Pairing and syncing happen directly between your devices on the same local network. Each device generates its own cryptographic keys at first launch; those private keys never leave the device. Paired devices authenticate each other with those keys and communicate over an encrypted connection. This traffic does not pass through Dataly servers.
Sharing
We share information only with the service providers that make the apps work, and only for that purpose:
- Google (Firebase, AdMob, Google Play). Accounts, diagnostics, push notifications, advertising and Android subscriptions, handled under Google's privacy policy.
- Apple (App Store, push notifications). iOS subscriptions and notifications, handled under Apple's privacy policy.
- Railway. Hosting for our server and database.
- Resend. Delivering sign-in codes to your email.
- Mobile networks. When you redeem free data, the phone number and bundle size are used to send the data to that number.
- Vercel. Hosting for this website.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety or property of our users or ourselves.
Storage and retention
Your data-usage history stays on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app. A history backup stays on our server until you remove your email or ask us to delete your account. Reward, redemption and subscription records are kept while your account exists, and redemption records may be kept longer where needed for fraud prevention and accounting. Fair-use fingerprints are kept while your account exists. Diagnostic data held by Firebase is retained according to Google's standard retention periods. Hosting logs are kept by Vercel for a short period and then discarded.
Data on our server is sent over encrypted connections, and email addresses and phone numbers are stored encrypted.
Your choices and controls
- Use Dataly without an email, rewards or a subscription. All are optional.
- Remove your email in Settings, which also deletes your history backup.
- Remove a paired device at any time from the Devices screen.
- Turn notifications off in the app or in your phone's settings.
- Manage or cancel a subscription in Google Play or your Apple account settings.
- Reset your advertising and consent choices in your device settings, or in the app.
- On iOS, turn off "Allow Apps to Request to Track" to keep ads non-personalised.
- Limit ad tracking and reset your advertising ID in your Android settings.
- Uninstall the app to stop all collection and remove the locally stored usage history.
- Contact us to see the information linked to your account, or to have your account and its data deleted.
Children
Dataly is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, or under the minimum age required in your country. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will remove it.
International users
Dataly is available in several countries. Our server and the providers listed above may process information on servers outside your country, under the safeguards described in their privacy policies.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the apps change. When we do, we will revise the effective date above, and for significant changes we will highlight them in the app or on this page.
